DESCRIPTION:FREE IN-PERSON WORKSHOP FOR EDUCATORS \nFrom Yad Vashem\, Jerusalem to New Jersey at the Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center at Stockton University’s Galloway campus. Join us for a special workshop designed for teachers grades 5 through 12 & higher education. Sheryl Ochayon\, author\, Echoes and Reflections Project Director and Educator at the International School for Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem\, will show educators how love was an act of resistance during the Holocaust\, and how love stories can be used to teach the Holocaust. Forbidden relationships were dangerous and had high risks; yet the will to survive\, resist\, and rebuild lives during and after the Holocaust is part of the life stories of Holocaust survivors. These stories about how the human spirit is able to overcome will be highlighted. Free resources will be distributed to teacher participants.

SUMMARY:The Annual Kristallnacht Lecture Remembering the Holocaust & Emigration: The Moritz and Hammerschlag Families
DESCRIPTION:The Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center will commemorate the 85th Anniversary of Kristallnacht with the Annual Kristallnacht Lecture at 7 p.m. on Monday\, Nov. 6th\, in-person at the Chabad at the Shore – Chai Center (6605 Atlantic Avenue\, Ventnor City\, NJ 08406) and online via Zoom.\n \nDr. Michael Hayse\, Associate Professor of Historical Studies and Holocaust & Genocide Studies at Stockton University will speak about the experiences of Wally (nee Moritz) and Lutz Hammerschlag during and after Kristallnacht. Kristallnacht\, also known as the November Pogrom\, was an organized two days of violence and destruction targeting Jews in Germany and previously annexed Austria on November 9-10\, 1938. During this pogrom\, 1408 synagogues and places of worship were destroyed\, and 30\,000 Jewish men were arrested. The government\, instead of protecting the Jews\, encouraged citizens to commit this violence and vandalism.\n \nThis program will feature Dr. Hayse\, as well as Lennard Hammerschlag\, the son of Wally and Lutz Hammerschlag\, and a resident of Southern New Jersey. They will explore the aftermath of Kristallnacht. Like many Jews in Germany\, Wally and Lutz realized they could no longer live safely in Germany and sought refuge in another country. Both families found refuge in the only place they could secure a visa: Rhodesia (today Zimbabwe).\n \nThis program is open to the general public. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences New Jersey Center for Civic Education. \nOne of the essential but sometimes overlooked components of civic education is providing students with opportunities to develop the knowledge\, skills\, and dispositions to assume the role of citizen. Project Citizen is a program proven as an effective option by independent studies. Project Citizen is available on two levels for middle school and high school students. The workshop will familiarize teachers with the components and process utilized by Project Citizen and provide the information necessary to implement the program in the classroom. It will also prepare teachers to enter their classes in the optional Project Citizen showcase should they choose to do so.

SUMMARY:Survivor Speaks & How to Bring them to your Classroom
DESCRIPTION:New Jersey is a pioneer in Holocaust Education and has one of the largest populations of Holocaust Survivors. One of the most meaningful and unique experiences a New Jersey student gets is having a Holocaust Survivor or a descendant of Survivors come to speak to their class. The New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education and its 30 Holocaust Resource Centers throughout the state are available to assist teachers in giving this experience to their students. This program is designed to\, not only give the experience of hearing a Survivor speak but also to give NJ teachers the tools they need in order to meaningfully and appropriately incorporate live testimony into their Holocaust lessons.
