The NJEA Consortium: Designing Inclusive Futures

The NJEA Consortium, supported by a grant from the National Education Association (NEA), aims to revolutionize the integration of representative curricula into K-12 teaching across New Jersey. Our mission moves beyond presenting diversity as "heroes and holidays," working instead toward the continuous celebration of our state's rich diversity and the intentional inclusion of all voices.

On April 1, 2022, the NEA awarded NJEA a three-year grant entitled Cultivating Community, Action, Justice, and Understanding through the NJEA Consortium: Connections. Community. Curriculum. With collaborative efforts from NJEA staff, member design-teams, and partnerships spanning over 25 prestigious educational institutions and social justice advocacy organizations, the Consortium is infusing historically marginalized identities into K-12 teaching and learning through a strategic, three-phased rollout of resources led by Dr. Kim Pinckney.

Our Iterative Growth

This initiative is built on the philosophy of continuous improvement. We are currently navigating through the following stages:

  • Phase I: A comprehensive collection of resources designed to anchor inclusive instruction. Because our work is an iterative effort, the Consortium will continue to update and expand these Phase I materials to ensure they remain relevant and impactful.
  • Phase II: Supported through an NEA Professional Excellence Grant, this phase focuses on the publishing of instructional performance tasks for immediate use in NJ classrooms and the designing asynchronous eLearning courses. These modules are built to deepen the foundations established in Phase I, providing educators with flexible, high-quality professional learning pathways.
  • Phase III: Future developments aimed at scaling and sustaining these transformative practices across the state, to include the establishment of official learning paths and a micro-credential where NJEA members can be come Consortium-endorsed educators.

Read more about the Consortium’s iterative approach via this open-source peer-reviewed article: The Iterative Edge: The NJEA Consortium’s Design Process in Support of Inclusive Education.

This initiative goes beyond curriculum; it is about building strong community relationships, providing professional development, and fostering conversations that ensure every New Jersey student can see themselves reflected in their school’s teachings.
